The Punjab Education Department is reviewing a large number of schools after weak 9th class results and low student enrolment at matric level.
Officials are looking at schools where fewer than 20 students are registered for matric classes. One proposal under consideration is to return some of these schools to middle-school status.
The move comes as the department looks at both student numbers and academic performance in government schools across the province.
Schools With Fewer Than 20 Matric Students Under Review
According to the Education Department, hundreds of schools in Punjab have fewer than 20 students enrolled in matric classes.
Some examples have also been reported in Lahore. Government High School Saint Francis New Anarkali has fewer than 10 matric students, while Government Pakistan Model School Rehmanpura has fewer than 20 registered students.
Government High School Sant Nagar is also among the schools reported to have a very small number of matric students.
The department is now examining whether keeping high-school status is practical for schools with such low enrolment.
What Could Happen to Students?
If a school loses its high-school status, students currently studying matric there would not be left without an option.
According to the information provided by the Education Department, affected students would be shifted to nearby schools where matric classes are available.
This would allow students to continue their education while the department reviews the future status of schools with very low enrolment.
Poor 9th Class Results Also Raise Concerns
Student numbers are not the only issue being considered by education officials.
Schools that recorded very poor 9th class results are also facing scrutiny.
Lahore Chief Executive Officer Education Tariq Mahmood said strict action would be taken against schools that perform poorly in the 9th class examinations.
He said schools with a pass rate below 30 percent have been asked to explain why their results were so low.
Why Is the Department Reviewing These Schools?
The review appears to focus on two main areas: student enrolment and academic performance.
Schools with very few matric students may be difficult to maintain as full high schools, while consistently weak results can raise concerns about students’ academic progress.
The Education Department is therefore examining these schools before deciding what action should be taken.
For students and parents, the main concern will be making sure that any changes do not affect their education and that students can continue their matric studies without unnecessary difficulty.
