Abstract
Besides the likely economic and environmental disturbances in the shared river basin, there are a number of legal and political impracticalities associated with a potential Indian withdrawal from or unilateral termination of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT). Like many other international treaties, the IWT is governed by its own set of rules and can only be ended if it is replaced by another treaty between India and Pakistan on the same subject. The pact creates a non-terminable partnership governed by extensive international obligations and customary norms. A breach of international commitments has political repercussions as well. This research aims to address the topic of why it is not feasible for India to cancel the IWT by examining the legal and political components of the dispute. At the same time, it will analyse the potential ripple consequences of the treaty’s repeal, including how other regional powers like China, Nepal, and Bangladesh might decide to do the same thing. So, the focus of this study will be on how India’s withdrawal from the pact can affect security and stability in the area.
