Abstract
The United States and the international community must overcome significant obstacles to achieve “democratic development” in Afghanistan. Despite American best efforts, bringing democracy and stability to Afghanistan has thus far failed. There are some encouraging indicators, though. National pacts, elections, and the creation of a constitution have all contributed to a renewed optimism that democracy may grow with the support of the international community and the United States in particular. How much progress has been made by the United States toward establishing peace and security in the once-torn nation? If democracy faces such difficulties, what are its future prospects? The study assesses the US government’s efforts since 9/11 to make Afghanistan safe from terrorists, secure, and democratic. This paper would explain the motivations for the change in US policy and the eventual invasion in Afghanistan, discusses the steps the United States has taken so far to combat terrorism and bring stability and democracy to the country and highlights key challenges facing the United States and the prospects for democracy in Afghanistan.
