Abstract

The Sino-US offshore maritime interests balancing act as a perfect example of great power dynamics in the Indo-Pacific. It depends upon the realist argument that Pakistan’s security interests are significantly impacted by any conflict or overlap of Sino-US maritime interests. The argument is based on historical parallels and contends that the engagement of large powers in South Asia has been one of expediency, opportunism, and short-term benefit that the powerful have imposed on the weak. Three sections make up this paper, Sino-US interest convergence and divergence, Sino-US maritime policy in the Indian Ocean, and implications for Pakistan’s maritime security are all discussed. Furthermore, this paper discusses the increasing modernization of forces by the great powers leading to arms race in the maritime domain. The IOR holds great importance to South Asia, and a tug of war between Sino-US in the region would greatly impact how the region shapes out in the future.
