Abstract

When the long war in Afghanistan failed to produce desirable outcomes, the need to examine the strategy behind it became apparent. Because of this, the US had to publicly declare its intention to withdraw from Afghanistan. When the United States ‘withdraws’ its personnel from Afghanistan, it will not be fighting terrorists on the ground. Instead, it will be providing aid and training to the Afghan government in the hopes that the Afghan security forces will be able to handle the job on their own. It consists of restricting the United States’ efforts to eradicate Al-Qaeda “safe havens” across the Pak-Afghan tribal border region, as outlined under the outlines of the “AfPak” policy. Initiating a process of reconciliation in regards to Afghanistan’s nation-building effort while keeping regional and international stability in mind is also part of this. This article will analyse the goals of the war and attempt to predict what might happen once the United States pulls out.
